BOB MARVEL CUSTOM 1911 CLASSES

Deep River Customs, a manufacturer of high quality 1911 pistols, is proud to sponsor Bob Marvel, who will be teaching custom 1911 courses in Asheboro, NC, beginning in April 2015.

Bob Marvel is nationally and internationally acclaimed for his craftsmanship in building exceptionally reliable and accurate 1911 pistols.  In the past thirty years he built national championship and world championship winning pistols, as well as pistols for the military, law enforcement, and for civilian use.  Bob is well known for a series of .22/1911 conversion designs, 1911 design improvements, products for the 1911, and as a consultant to the firearms industry.

Bob has taught private 1911 classes at his shop and trained individuals who are now successful with their own shops.  He also taught NRA 1911 classes at Montgomery Community College in Troy, NC, for the past five years.  Given this background, Deep
River Customs is confident that Bob’s classes will be a meaningful and productive experience for all class participants.

This will be a thorough, comprehensive 10 day course to teach the participants how to build a custom 1911 pistol using specific knowledge of each part.  The 10 day schedule is required due to the amount of information, knowledge, and custom pistol building skills that are to be passed on to the students.  Simply put, five days is not enough time.

The classes will involve supervised “hands-on” training, lectures, class discussion, trouble shooting, range time and reviews.  At the end of the course, each student will walk away with a custom built 1911 pistol, and the knowledge of how the pistol works, and how to build and repair 1911 pistols from the knowledge acquired in class.

THE COURSE OF INSTRUCTION INCLUDES (but is not limited to):

-HOW THE PISTOL OPERATES
-SEQUENCE OF THE BUILD
-PRECISE/REPEATABLE SLIDE TO FRAME FITTING
-PROVEN MATCH GRADE BARREL FITTING
-DETAILED TRIGGER/ACTION WORK
-CHANGES REQUIRED FOR DIFFERENT PISTOL USES
-WHAT/WHY PARTS EFFECT ACCURACY & RELIABILITY
-RELOADING DETAILS RELATED TO ACCURACY
-LOAD DATA AND RESEARCH INFORMATION
-ALL FACTORS FOR 50 YARD-10 SHOT GROUPS UNDER 1.2”
-USE OF VARIOUS TOOLS TO IMPROVE SKILL AND QUALITY
-TROUBLE SHOOTING BY CAUSE AND EFFECT
-VARIATIONS OF THE 1911 DESIGN
-BLENDING METHODS
-SPECIFIC INFORMATION ON EACH PART OF THE 1911
-SHOP MANUAL

Every detail of the 1911 pistol will be covered, so be prepared to take a lot of notes.

Although it is important to learn how to build the pistol, it is equally important to learn how and why the 1911 functions and why certain methods are used or certain changes are made.  Theory is not enough: there must be a logical, proven method that is predictable and repeatable.

MINIMAL TOOL REQUIREMENTS:

The class is designed to make it easy for the student to fly or drive in without spending a lot of money on tools and without hauling or shipping a tool box across the country.  Although there are a few things to you will need to bring along, everything you need to build the pistol will be available for use and set up on your individual workbench at the school.  However, if you would like any of the tools or parts used in the class, you may order them and Deep River Customs will ship the products directly to you after the class.

REQUIREMENTS TO BRING TO CLASS:

A GOOD DIAL CALIPER
A GOOD OUTSIDE MICROMETER (ELECTRONIC IS FINE)

SAFETY GLASSES & EAR PROTECTION
OPTI-VISOR WITH A LOUPE
FFL COPY (if you have one)
100 ROUNDS MINIMUM (available for purchase locally)
FRAME,SLIDE, AND OTHER COMPONENTS (The cost of the parts are included in the cost of the class.)

The participants will work with frames and slides that have been machined out of forgings.  The government model frame will be checkered (25 lpi) and the government model slide will have Marvel buried and protected rear sight cuts and a cross dovetail front cut.  All of the other main components have been made out of high grade bar stock or tool steel.

All of the kits will be of the same quality and of the same manufacture in order to provide uniformity and cohesion in training. This will allow Bob to provide you with the benefit of his years of experience in the time allotted for the class.  The goal is to finish up with a true custom pistol that you have built, while allowing the additional benefit of learning how to resolve issues with other types/brands of pistols and parts.

All of the pistols will be in stainless steel, although the option of a black nitride finish or stainless steel “bluing” will be available at an additional cost after the completion of the course.  Finishing, other than bead blasting, will not be an option in the class due to time constraints.
